5 Best Sober Apps to Stop Drinking or Cut Back in 2025

Another day, another promise that this time will be different — you’ll drink less, or drink less of the hard stuff, at least.

Yet one drink turns into another (and another), or one bad day turns into a bender, and despite the commitments you’ve made to yourself or your loved ones, those commitments mostly seem to end the same way: With shame, frustration, and a bad hangover.

Whether you just want to cut back or stop drinking altogether, there’s never been a better time to get more support.

The journey toward sobriety or alcohol reduction isn’t one you need to undertake alone, and certainly not one that you need to feel shame around.

The super computers in our pockets may, in fact, be the missing piece. The apps that exist today are so much more robust and thoughtful, and can be amazing tools as you work toward freeing yourself from the impact of compulsive drinking.

We’ve chosen the best app for five different categories: tracking your sobriety and staying motivated, accessing peer community, deepening your education and skills, cultivating a sober lifestyle, and developing new, healthier habits.

That said, if you believe that you’re struggling with alcohol use disorder (AUD), an app is likely not an adequate support on its own, particularly if you’re at risk of alcohol withdrawal.

1. For Tracking & Motivation: I Am Sober

Key Features:

Cost: Free, premium version costs $9.99/mo or $119.88/year

Available on: iOS and Android

Pros:

  • Can track multiple addictions at once
  • Offers workbooks and motivational activities
  • Has community boards and access to other supports
  • App is HIPAA compliant
  • Free version is robust

Cons:

  • Must be 18+ to use (standard for these types of apps)
  • Note-taking feature has a character limit
  • Streak tracking may not feel motivational for everyone
  • “Calorie savings” and other weight-focused language may be triggering to those in ED recovery

About the app: I Am Sober is a free app (with a premium version as well!) for celebrating your sobriety milestones, as well as maintaining motivation through mindfulness, accountability, streak-tracking, and peer connection.

Why we chose it: I Am Sober has all the key ingredients that users would expect from a holistic sobriety tracking app. Its built-in reminders and motivational prompts offer consistent touch points for those struggling, as well as workbooks that go even deeper to ensure motivation is sourced not just through shame or fear of consequence, but through an honest evaluation of one’s patterns, history, and values. It’s easy to use and the free version is valuable on its own.

2. For Community Support: WEconnect

Key Features:

Cost: Free, premium version costs $40/mo or $350/year

Available on: iOS/Android

Pros:

  • Virtual support meetings available daily via web or app
  • Meetings held on an encrypted platform (Zoom) and led by peer support specialists
  • Identity-specific groups for LGBTQIA+ community, mothers, men, etc
  • Harm reduction meeting available for those who need this approach
  • 1-to-1 peer support specialists available through Premium
  • Some insurance plans can help cover Premium features

Cons:

  • Meetings based in US time zones
  • No identity-specific group for people of color (yet!)
  • Some may prefer groups facilitated by clinicians (rather than peer support specialists)

About the app: WEconnect is a digital platform that provides support to those in recovery, including from substance use, through community groups and 1-to-1 peer support. They also utilize an approach called contingency management, which is a behavioral intervention that uses rewards to reinforce positive decision-making in recovery.

Why we chose it: WEconnect offers a variety of peer groups without being bound to the 12-step format, which may work for some but not all. We appreciate that the groups can be accessed from a variety of devices, and cover identity-specific concerns as well as themes like grief. Most notably, the platform offers a harm reduction group, for those who aren’t open or able to maintain total abstinence. The additional features of 1-to-1 peer support and routine building make this app comprehensive in a way that most other community-based apps are not.

3. For Education and Skills: Reframe

Key Features:

Cost: Base subscription is $24.99/mo or $119.99/year, with added costs for accessing coaching services

Available on: iOS/Android

Pros:

  • Program rooted in neuroscience and evidence base
  • Course library is in-depth and spans many relevant topics
  • Offers a very comprehensive “toolkit” to navigate cravings and other obstacles
  • App design is visually appealing and intuitive to use
  • Supportive for those who wish to stop drinking entirely or cut back

Cons:

  • After 7-day free trial, there is no free version of the app
  • Pricing for subscription and other services can be unclear and confusing
  • “Calorie savings” and other weight-focused language may be triggering to those in ED recovery

About the app: Reframe is a neuroscience-backed app that is designed to support those who wish to reduce their drinking or stop drinking entirely. Of its many features, it includes educational courses and meditations, a skills library to manage difficult emotions and cravings, and coaching and community support for those in need of connection.

Why we chose it: We felt that the strong focus on evidence-based education and tools made Reframe a standout in this category. The app does an excellent job of demystifying the science of addiction and compulsion, and making it digestible for those who want to better understand themselves and their drinking. The coping tools library is similarly robust, and the app even has a “cravings mode” where the user is offered games to play as a distraction for 20 minutes (the time it often takes for a craving to pass).

4. For Sober Lifestyle: Loosid

Key Features:

Cost: Free, with the Premium version costing $19.99/mo

Available on: iOS/Android

Pros:

  • Free version gives you access to most important features
  • Can be used for finding friends, local events, or dates
  • Has a recovery story library for inspiration and encouragement
  • Offers some tracking features as well

Cons:

  • Doesn’t allow pseudonym or fake name to be used
  • May not have much to offer depending on your local area/where you live
  • Best for those who wish to connect offline (as opposed to virtually)

About the app: Loosid is an app that functions as a social and community network, allowing you to find people in your local area to connect with socially or even romantically. It also lets you know about events and restaurants, making it easier to maintain sobriety while building a solid support system locally.

Why we chose it: Sobriety has a reputation of being boring, unfun, or isolating, but Loosid confronts that misconception directly, and encourages users to find their sober community and create a life worth living. Sobriety can be fun, and Loosid makes it easier to find like-minded sober individuals and community events that ensure that you don’t have to sacrifice your sobriety to have a good time.

5. For New Habits: Finch

Key Features:

Cost: Free, with a Premium version that costs $9.99/mo or ~$49.99/year

Available on: iOS/Android

Pros:

  • Free version has all essential features
  • “Gameified” care app makes maintaining habits more fun
  • App uses a reward system to motivate users
  • Can connect with friends while maintaining privacy around habits you’re working on
  • Offers coping tools, journal prompts, and others supports built into the app itself

Cons:

  • Not specific to drinking (which makes it more discrete, but may not be for everyone)
  • Cute aesthetic may be fun to some but off-putting for others

About the app: Finch is a habit tracking app that allows users to take care of a pet penguin by decorating its home, dressing it up in outfits, and traveling to distant lands to earn rewards and complete quests. The app also has built-in coping tools and journal prompts to support self-care and personal development.

Why we chose it: While its cute appearance may suggest a younger audience, don’t be fooled! Many adults will find this app to be a fun and accessible way to not only maintain their sobriety goals, but to instill new and healthier habits as well. Because the app is more discrete in its purpose, and allows you to connect with friends without disclosing your personal information, we chose Finch as the best option for creating new and supportive habits.

Honorary Mention: Meeting Guide

We recognize that, for some, the best path to sobriety will involve a 12-step program or group. The app Meeting Guide is the easiest way to uncover which meetings are happening in your local area.
